“G‘ Is for Gumshoe‘ exhibition by Elena Pecenová and Vojtěch Novák is a parallel continuation of the ‚Clueless Agency‘ series of off-site exhibitions by Prague collective PGS. The exhibition series is guided by the possessed mind and mental state of a zealous private eye, a keen detective, an undefined character who is absolutely committed to what they/he/she calls “the greater resolution“, but only to get lost in its own case.

Since 2018, the PGS platform, Proto Gallery Systems, has been supporting the creation of off-site exhibitions that connects young Czech art with the international independent art scene. PGS is a nomadic gallery that explores new approaches to collective production and curation – giving space to experiment with the format of the exhibition making and its subsequent presentation.

In 2021-2023, a series of exhibitions presented under the title Clueless Agency were held in the burnt-out hut in the Iron Mountains, FUTURA Centre for Contemporary Art – Karlin Studios, Prison Museum Uničov – during UFF 11, at Montez press radio and No Moon in New York, on the half-submerged ocean liner in Athens, and at a fusion reactor facility of Tokamak Golem in Prague, along with shows at Královice stables, Laichter house, burned out Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, and now as a satellite show at C. Rockefeller Center for the Contemporary Arts. The exhibition series is guided by the possessed mind and mental state of a zealous private eye, a keen detective, an undefined character who is absolutely committed to what they/he/she calls “the greater resolution“, but only to get lost in its own case. We see this metaphorical figure of the detective as a rag doll to which we can apply various approaches and ideas, as curators of the PGS or the individual contributors to the Clueless Agency series. Clueless Agency thus becomes “something“ with many faces, a thousand and one intentions, desires, and stories to tell.
Clueless Agency: A Novel
Along with the exhibitions, texts and visual material have been produced to be included in the upcoming publication Clueless Agency: A Novel („A“ is for Alibi). We are basing the forthcoming publication on the Artist’s Novel approach, a hybridization of visual art and literature, but also on the genre of detective fiction and noir aesthetics. The reader should be reading through the publication like through an archive. Finding out various common elements and links, following clues that don’t lead to a pre-given meaning.
